SmartWay Excellence Award

October, 2006 - Roehl was among a handful of trucking companies honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last month for its leading efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from truck exhaust. The company received the agency's first SmartWaySM Award of Excellence.

As a SmartWay partner, Roehl commits to reducing fuel consumption and environmentally harmful exhaust emissions from its fleet of 1,550 semi-tractors, one of the top 100 largest trucking fleets in the nation. “Roehl was already a leader in fuel-efficient operations before joining the SmartWay program. In the year since, we’ve become even more environmentally friendly,” VP of Maintenance Phil Trierweiler said. The company has improved truck mileage by changing from conventional to synthetic motor oil, switching a significant portion of its fleet to wide-based single tires and equipping all new tractors with components that make the tractor-trailer unit more aerodynamic.

October, 2006 - Shippers can relax when their freight is on board a Roehl Transport truck, according to the American Trucking Associations' (ATA) review of carriers' claim records and loss prevention efforts. The Marshfield, WI based trucking company recently won the ATA's top award for Excellence in Claims/Loss Prevention.

Open to motor carriers of all types and sizes, this prestigious national award pays homage to the company that sets the bar for claims management, loss prevention and damage control, ATA Executive Director Susan Chandler noted.

"Claim-free service goes hand-in-hand with Roehl's industry-leading safety record," President Rick Roehl said. The company's flatbed division has been identified as one of the nation's safest small fleets, while Roehl's van fleet was also acknowledged as one of the best among large carriers. "Operating safely not only protects the motoring public and our drivers, it's also a big part of delivering our customers' freight safe and sound," Rick Roehl said. "This award also complements our recent national accolades for industry-leading service," he added.

In earning the award, Roehl demonstrated a leading loss-prevention program that results in less damage as well as faster, smoother claims processing when it does occur. "We believe our customers deserve that kind of service. In fact, we work very hard every day at being the best quality company in the business," Rick Roehl said. "These awards, in so many different areas, attest to our commitment and the quality of our drivers and other employees," he added.

November, 2006 - Only a select few trucking companies are registered with the DOL as a recognized apprenticeship. This designation is a reflection of the quality of our fleet and our training programs. Roehl's strong training and development programs have also led to numerous safety awards.

ATA Human Resources Professional of the Year

October 2006 - Marshfield-based Roehl Transport continued its record of industry leadership recently when the American Trucking Associations (ATA) singled out the company's Vice President of Workforce Development and Administration, Greg Koepel, as the trucking industry's Human Resources Professional of the Year.

Receiving the honor, Koepel, credited the company's 2,200 employees with the corporate culture and successes that brought him the recognition. "The fact is the Roehl family, leadership team and staff are committed to the concept of driver success and are very open to innovative policies for ensuring it. Roehl drivers, in turn, embrace the values underlying our human resources practices as true professionals earning national recognition for safety and customer service," Koepel said. "Roehl is very much a team organization. Our successes in every aspect of the business reflect the efforts and commitment of the entire company," he added.

Koepel is the first person to receive the award from the ATA, which intends to continue recognizing the importance of the human resources function within the industry by making it an annual honor. Representing nearly 38,000 trucking companies across the U.S., which together employ as many as 700,000 drivers and support staff, the ATA has identified a growing driver shortage as the most critical issue facing the industry. Koepel's recognition reflects not only his experience, professional development and industry involvement, but also Roehl's leading ability to attract, train and retain drivers through personnel polices and operational practices that better meet their needs. At Roehl, Koepel works across a broad-range of HR functions including policy development, pay and benefits administration, recruiting and staffing, and training.

"The driver shortage is a long-term challenge and simply recruiting drivers from other companies doesn't solve the problem at the industry level," Koepel explained. "Roehl is a driver maker not a driver taker," he said. "We've made over-the-road driving a more attractive career with better compensation, better home time, better training and by identifying integrity and safety as our highest corporate values."

In addition to Koepel's award, Roehl's flatbed division was honored as the second safest in the nation among small fleets while the company's van division safety record was the third best in the nation among large carriers. In addition Roehl received the ATA's Excellence in Claims/Loss Prevention Award. Roehl is one of the 100 largest trucking companies in the nation, providing truckload van, curtainside and flatbed services throughout the U.S. and Canada.

August, 2006 - When Roehl was recognized as one of the top 100 trucking companies in the industry by Commercial Carriers Journal for each of the past two years, it was because we not only increased driver wages, increased benefits, increased profit sharing contributions, and grew our fleet and freight lanes, but because we did all of these and still showed double digit growth for 2004, 2005. In the trucking business, as with any business, double - digit profit increases meen you're doing something right. Logistics Management "Quest for Quality" for Truckload - Industrial/heavy haul carriers

July, 2006 - When customers rate a trucking company as the best in it's industry, it means it's doing something right. When they honor it two years in row, it means the company has an ongoing core commitment to excellence and the operational structure to assure it meets that goal day in and day out. And that is exactly the case for Roehl Transport whose flatbed division has recently received Logistic Management's Quest for Quality Gold Award for the second consecutive year, according to Roehl Executive Vice President Bob Rader. Quest for quality medalion

The 2006 award is based on a survey of thousands of shippers across the country who were asked to rate transportation companies in terms of five service criteria: on-time performance, value, customer service, information technology and equipment/operations. In the category of industrial heavy loads (flatbed cargo), the shippers once again identified Roehl as the service leader.

Regarded as one of the most prestigious awards in the trucking industry, Quest for Quality recognition is especially appreciated at Roehl, Rader said. "First, it is an endorsement by our customers. They are the people we are in business for so their praise is gratifying. Second, this award honors our drivers. Top service is a company-wide effort but it's our drivers who bring the ball into the end zone," he explained.

"When you add leading customer service to our recent recognition as one of the top three safest trucking carriers in the nation, it's clear Roehl drivers are elite pros and the best on the road," Rader said.

Great West Risk Management - Platinum Award for 2005 Safety and Operational Excellence

May, 2006 - Roehl Transport, headquartered in Marshfield, WI has been awarded Great West Risk Management’s highest honor for safety. The Platinum Safety Award is based on accident and safety statistics.

Safety at Roehl is evaluated in terms of both the number and severity of accidents. In addition, the company looks at several other measurements such as DOT inspection reports and drivers' records, Roehl executive vice president Bob Rader explained. He noted that by industry standards, the company has an exceptionally high number of drivers with Million Miles Safe Driving awards.

"Roehl's leading safety record reflects the fact the company holds safety as its cornerstone value," Rader said. "Safety is the primary consideration underlying every decision and action in the company. We live by that value and no extenuating circumstances are ever allowed to supercede it." That core value commitment led the company to develop a proprietary safe driving program that goes beyond defensive driving with an emphasis on protective driving. "The goal is not just to avoid being involved in an accident, but driving in a manner that protects others from accidents," Rader explained.

"Roehl's unique approach to the ideal of safety benefits the company, our drivers and the motoring public," he added.

May, 2006 - What if your favorite football team took the field for the season opener next year and 50% of the players had never played in the pros before? Then, despite the fact that so many players were new, your team executed almost flawlessly, beat all of the more veteran teams in the conference and ended up in the Super Bowl? That's how it happens at Roehl Transport of Marshfield, Wis.

American Trucking Association Logo

Despite the fact that almost 50% of Roehl's rapidly expanding fleet of drivers is new to the industry with less than a year of professional over-the-road experience, the company turned in one of the nations top safety records among large (over 100 million miles per year) truckload carriers. In fact, Roehl was the leading for hire carrier in the American Trucking Association's (ATA) 2005 Truck Safety Awards large general commodities truckload carrier category. Based on measurable performance such as the ratio of DOT reportable accidents per mile driven, the award is considered the industry's premier honor for fleet safety.

"Like the winning football team, it's a remarkable accomplishment that can only be attributed to great players, top coaching and a team culture that just won't quit," claimed Roehl Vice President of Safety John Spiros.

"Roehl's safety record starts with the right corporate values and everything good happens from there," Spiros said. "Our cornerstone value is safety. It is the primary consideration of every action and decision made in the company at all levels, all the time. There's never a question. We never, ever compromise safety or take on increased risk to achieve some other goal."

That commitment has led the company to develop an industry-leading safe driving program. Unlike the standard 'defensive' driving programs commonly used for fleet training, Roehl's proprietary program elevates the driver's role to 'protective' driving. "It's not enough just to avoid getting caught up in an accident, our drivers are taught to drive in a way that protects others from getting hurt as well, even when a potentially dangerous situation doesn't pose a great risk to us directly," Spiros explained. "We're not just steering clear of potential accidents; we drive in a way that helps defuse the hazard." The program emphasizes personal responsibility and the use of seven simple techniques of protective driving.

Closely associated with Roehl's commitment to safety is a companion value of driver success. "The same impulse that leads to a concern for driver safety also underlies a commitment to top pay, more home time, better equipment, career paths, all the things that help drivers succeed in the job. It's a whole package that attracts the best drivers, both experienced and students," Spiros said. "Their commitment to professionalism and our training and support perpetuates our record performance, not just in the area of safety but in every other measure of a top quality carrier as well. It's a success loop."
