Realistic expectations make earning bonuses easy.
Performance and safety bonuses can add thousands of dollars to a driver's income but only if the requirements to earn them are reasonable. "Dangling the promise of a bonus that hardly anyone will ever get doesn't count as part of great pay plan," said Greg Koepel Vice President of Workforce Development. Driven by the company's award-winning safety program, the majority of Roehl drivers receive quarterly safety bonuses as well as annual performance bonues.
Quarterly Safety Bonus
The bonus is earned for consistently meeting expectations for safety, productivity, efficiency and customer service. The bonus is paid quarterly in the month following the end of the quarter in which it's earned. The Safety / Performance bonus for the 1st quarter is paid in April, the 2nd quarter in July, 3rd quarter in October, and 4th quarter in January.
You become eligible to earn the Safety / Performance bonus at the beginning of your first full quarter after you begin to earn regular mileage pay. For students, the first full quarter following graduation from Evolution II of the Safety & Job Skills Training Program (Around 21 to 25 days after your hire date). If you do not qualify for the bonus in a quarter, you become eligible to qualify again in the next quarter.
You'll qualify for the bonus if, during the quarter, you:
- Have no preventable:
- accidents
- equipment damage
- cargo claims
- on the job 'lost time' injuries
- No Traffic Citation, including citations for not wearing your seat belt. (Eligibility will be restored if you are exonerated / acquitted of the charge).
- Attended the Quarterly Safety Meeting.
- Are not involved in a Performance Improvement Process beyond Verbal Warning.
- Have met the minimum paid mileage standards, which are:
- Solo = 26,500 miles
- Team = 48,000 miles
- Hometime Plus Fleets
- 7 on / 4 off - 7 on / 3 off = 23,500 miles
- 7 on / 4 off - 7 on / 3 off Teams = 41,500 miles
- 7 on / 7 off = 18,000 miles
- 7 on / 7 off Teams = 34,000 miles
Miles are counted in the calendar quarter in which the load assignment was completed (delivered).
If you meet these criteria, you'll receive a bonus payment of three cents ($.03) for each paid mile over the standard. Drivers who are not available to run Canada (includes those denied entry due to lack of proof of citizenship) will be eligible to earn one and one-half cents ($.015) for each paid mile over the standard.
You can qualify for up to an additional three cents ($.03) per mile (if you are available to run Canada) by achieving these standards:
- Less than 2 percent overspeed
- No speed in excess of 71 miles per hour
- Idle time within company standards
If you achieve both the Overspeed and Idle standards, you'll receive up to three cents for each paid mile over the mileage standard.
- Met both for one month: One cent ($.01)
- Met both for two months: Two cents ($.02)
- Met both for three months: Three cents ($.03)

Tows, jumpstarts and tire damage expenses incurred as a result of driver negligence or failure to follow company procedures will result in a bonus payout reduction of 50%.
While we want you to earn the bonuses we offer, we simply are not able to pay bonuses and, at the same time, pay the expenses of poor safety decisions, such as preventable accidents, cargo claims, or on-the-job injuries. Keep in mind that when you choose a behavior that does not reflect a personal value of safety, you are choosing not to earn bonuses that you otherwise might have.
